This session will be a 'Show and Tell' with three presenters speaking for approximately 10 minutes - with time for questions at the end.
Our three speakers are:
Rachel Hurd (Presbyterian Research Centre - Archives)
The “Roll of Chinese” was compiled by Rev. Alexander Don. This deceptively small book records the details of 3500 Chinese men whom Don encountered in his missionary work among the Chinese goldminers in Otago, Southland, and the West Coast between 1896 and 1913. Written in both English and Cantonese it is a truly unique document. Also of significance are Don’s four diaries which describe in vivid detail the world of the Chinese goldminers.
Claire Dowling (Anderson Lloyd)
Claire will discuss the comparison of Wills and Probates from Archives New Zealand to the current precedent, highlighting a few similarities and differences.
David Murray (Hocken Collections)
A new accession at Hocken brings to life school days at Tokomairiro District High School in the 1950s and 60s. The colour slides and sound recordings of the late Ken Dolphin are examples of the many school and associated records held by the Hocken Collections. David will be taking us through photographs taken by Ken Dolphin, during the 1960s, of the Tokomairiro district (Milton). Ken was particularly interested in documenting the district, the school and community events. He also put together an oral picture of the school in the 1960s – interviews with the man in the boiler room, the school road patrol etc. There are a few hundred photos in total.
We hope to see you there!
