Message from the ARANZ President
February 2010
With February here, 2010 is now well underway and everyone is back at work – except those who had the sense (or luxury) to wait till the good weather arrived to take their holidays!
We look forward to a number of events in the New Zealand records and archives calendar. It’s the year that audits of government departments by Archives New Zealand, under the Public Records Act, start.
For ARANZ, two major events are Records and Archives Week from May 1-7 and the annual conference in Wellington.
The theme for RAW this year is Industrious Kiwis: Archives and Industry . This is an opportunity to promote the archives of New Zealand’s industry and manuftoacturing heritage to the public, or to remind industrial organisations of the importance of their archives to understanding our society and economy. Too often, this is a neglected area of archives and our knowledge and understanding of the nation’s development in future will be the poorer if their records are not preserved.
The conference from August 25-27 is titled Investing in the Future, 2010: Research, Records and Preservation . Already it promises to have great speakers, interesting papers and lead-up meetings to make it well worth the trip to Wellington if you’re not already in the capital.
More information on these two events will become available on the website in the coming months.
For our members, there is also the opportunity to get involved in a discussion about possible future directions for our association, as a professional membership proposal is discussed at branches throughout the country. We urge you to get involved, through the variety of channels to be offered, and share your views with the Council.
On top of that, all our members no doubt face another challenging – but I hope, exciting – year, so I wish you all the best for it.
Feel free to give Council feedback any time via this email address: president@aranz.org.nz
