Auckland

Archives New Zealand, Auckland Office, 95 Richard Pearse Drive, Mangere

In celebration of Records and Archives Week 2010 the Archives New Zealand (Auckland Regional Office) is hosting a small exhibition of documents to illustrate four industries over time.

  • Whaling - from catching and killing whales to whale watching
  • Transport - from trams and trolley buses to motorways
  • Goldmining - from 693 stamper heads in Thames to environmental impact reports
  • Winemaking - from home consumption to quality export

Admission: Free

Open 9.30 am - 5.00 pm Monday to Friday, 26 April to 21 May 2010.

Dance Aotearoa New Zealand

Archiving Dance Forum, 8 May, 2-4pm

Location: 147 Great North Road, Grey Lynn

  • If we don’t preserve our dance materials we will lose New Zealand dance history. This forum explores where to start with our dance collections, who we should link with plus useful information. Guest: Mary Donald, Qualified archivist and performing arts specialist.

ARANZ Auckland Branch & Fletcher Challenge Archives

Fletcher Trust Archives, Tours and talk, 6 & 7 May, 11am, 1pm, 3pm

Location: Fletcher House, 810 Great South Road, Penrose

  • The Fletcher Trust and the ARANZ Auckland Branch invites interested people to visit the Fletcher Challenge Archives repository. The holdings consist of records of some of New Zealand’s most significant companies from 1840 to the present day. On view will be the award winning Archivist Table exhibition, marking Fletchers centennial in 2009. Also on display will be moving images, photographic media and an oral history listening post. Talks on the company history will also be presented.

Central Districts

Havelock North Library

  • Exhibition of Nimon's Bus Company. A company operating in Havelock North for 110 years. The exhibition includes photographs and ephemera form the operation of the company. On display from 1-7 May.

Napier City Council

Industrious Kiwis Display, 3-7 May, 8am-5pm

Locations: Civic Building, 231 Hastings Street, Napier & Taradale Library, White Street, Taradale

  • Napier City Council will be featuring the now redundant Municipal Electricity Department (MED) and tram system. Items will include a display on the Taradale Library Community notice board and displays at the Civic Building.

Wellington

ARANZ Wellington Branch & Labour History Project

Archives and Industry: Perspectives from Labour History, 6 May, 5.30pm-6.45pm

Location: Victoria University Government Buildings Annex, Lecture Theatre 1, Entrance from Stout Street

  • The Labour History Project and ARANZ Wellington Branch invites interested people to a talk by Labour History Project members Peter Franks, Dr Peter Clayworth and Lisa Sacksen who will draw on their research experiences to address current archival issues relating to New Zealand’s industrial history.

Industrious Kiwis – Online Exhibition

  • Online exhibition of is showcasing a small selection of items from Alexander Turnbull Library unpublished collections that celebrate and reflect the theme of industry. This will remain a permanent exhibition online.

Location: Wellington Convention Centre

  • Conference dedicated to the theme of digital continuity, preservation and long-term public sector information issues. The conference will feature internationally renowned experts from around the world.

Canterbury

CANTAGE (Canterbury Heritage)

Digital Exhibition ‘Archives and Industry: Industrious Kiwis’, 1-7 May

Archives New Zealand

Soldiering on Back Home: The Rehabilitation of Returned Soldiers and Their Return to Industry, Exhibition, 19 April – 28 May

  • From World War One the government responded to the need for rehabilitation and resettlement of ex-servicemen. State Advances Corporation, Lands and Survey, Post Office, Public Works, and other departments provided training, employment and support. This exhibition explores how the efforts and skills of rehabilitated servicemen assisted in the development and prosperity of New Zealand.

Presbyterian Church Archives of New Zealand

Location: Presbyterian Archives Research Centre, Knox College, Arden Street, Opoho, Dunedin

Stack and Steeple: Support of the Industrial Worker, 7-21 May

  • Exhibition of the church’s archives in response of the Presbyterian church to industrial development within New Zealand and the attempts at a relationship between faith, industry and labour.
  • Open Day and Behind the Scenes Tours, 8 May, 9am-12pm. Tours of the Presbyterian Archives Research Centre.
