May Day |
1 May and throughout month |
During the month of May, archives, galleries, libraries, museums, cultural heritage sites and organisations across Australia are encouraged to participate in MayDay – a national campaign for the protection of cultural heritage from disaster. Originating in the United States in 2006, the MayDay concept is promoted in Australia by Blue Shield Australia. MayDay aims to raise awareness about disaster preparedness and to encourage people to perform at least one disaster-preparedness task in May each year. There are many types of emergencies that we can be better prepared for, from the potential impact of faulty electrical wiring in the building next door, to bushfires, cyclones or even internal or external floods. In 2008, people in cultural heritage organisations are encouraged to print the MayDay 2008 flier and post it on a notice board before 1 May. Click HERE to download your copy of the MayDay flier and to learn how you can be involved in MayDay 2008. Contacts: blueshield@collectionscouncil.com.au, tharron.bloomfield@natlib.govt.nz |

Displayed a selection of archived letter books, from 1899 onwards, hand written minute books, old rates books, and most interesting of all, old photos of staff, some of whom are still employed here. Some staff brought in books of their own like 'The Way We Were' and others that contain old photographs of New Zealand. Unlocking the Basements : The Pandora's Box of Government |
Monday 5 May, 11.30 to 1.30 |
As 2010 approaches, most government departments are preparing for the audits which have been planned as part of the Public Records Act 2005. This, inevitably, involves assessing the existing paper records (and other media) of your organisation. Many of these records have been stored in basements or in offsite storage for many years and it can be extremely difficult to sort them into reasonable order. The State Services Commission, in conjunction with ARANZ would like to offer you the opportunity to take part in an hour and a half presentation and discussion which addresses this issue. See flier for more details. Contact: Di Dickson. Email Di.Dickson@ssc.govt.nz |

Display at the Library: '100 years for Upper Hutt Town Board, 24 April 1908-2008' |
21-30 April |
On 24 April 1908 the first Town Board for Upper Hutt convened at the Town Hall (Mayfair Building, Main street, currently the Mayfair Cafe). The following committees were established, finance, works and sanitation. A Town District Ranger was appointed and the District Pound Keeper was to work along side in a similar capacity. Perhaps the most important event to come from this meeting was the new Works Committee was instructed to continue the project of street lighting, this had been suspended when the district was first proclaimed owing to there being no local authority in office. Angus McCurdy, of great significance to the early development of Upper Hutt, was a frontrunner in pushing for a town board and later became the first Mayor of Upper Hutt in 1926. McCurdy is also honoured in this display. Contact: Jolene Russell, Archivist. Email jolene.russell@uhcc.govt.nz |
