Terms of Reference for Review of Michael Standish Prize

1. Introduction:

Since its inception in 2001 six awards have been made. As part of its Annual Plan process ARANZ Council has decided to review this Award to make sure that it continues to meet its objectives and to remain relevant to the New Zealand archives and records community. No Prize will be made in 2007, while the Review is undertaken, and the 2008 Prize will cover the period July 2006 – December 2007.

2. Background:

The origins of the Michael Standish Prize (named after the first Chief Archivist of National Archives) lie in F. Gerald Ham’s report Towards Career Professionalism: an Education Programme for New Zealand Archivists and Records Managers, 1994, where, on p.28, he recommended ‘the establishment by ARANZ of an award for the best paper published in Archifacts during the year, similar to the Society of American Archivists; Fellows Posner Prize’.

3. Review Panel:

ARANZ Council convened a Review Panel at its 26 March 2007 meeting to review the Michael Standish Prize and the Ian Wards Prize. The Panel members are: Jim McAloon, John Timmins, David Colquhoun, Janine Delaney and Malcolm McKinnon.

4. Terms of Reference:

The Review Panel has been asked to review and report back to Council on the appropriateness of the following aspects:

  • Purpose and criteria
  • Frequency of the award
  • Prize
  • Eligibility
  • Selection Committee
  • Promotion of the Award
  • Announcement, presentation and publicity of the Award

5. Timeframe:

Members are invited to make submissions relevant to the Terms of Reference, to the Review Panel. All submissions remain confidential to the Review Panel. Submissions should be sent to Dr McAloon by 31 August 2007.

6. Rules:

Name: Michael Standish Prize

Purpose & Criteria: This prize recognises an outstanding essay, by a New Zealand archivist or records manager, dealing with some facet of archives or records administration, history, theory and, or methodology and published in a recognised archives, records management, or other appropriate journal. Frequency: Annually, but Council reserves the right not to award the Prize in any one year.

Prize: Certificate and a cheque for $250.

Eligibility: Writers of essays who meet the above criteria published in the previous calendar year.

Selection Committee: A three person Selection Committee appointed by ARANZ Council, to include one Councillor (who shall act as Chair) not being the Editor of Archifacts, one practising professional archivist and one practicing professional records manager. The Selection Committee shall regulate its own procedures. The Selection Committee shall normally recommend any recipient to Council by 30 June each year.

Applications: Not required, but nominations addressed to the Chair of the Selection Committee are welcome.

Announcement: Council will normally announce the name of the recipient of the Prize at the Annual General Meeting.

The Ian Wards Prize honours the contribution to New Zealand scholarship of Ian McLean Wards, Chief Government Historian between 1968 and 1983, and, through his actions and unceasing advocacy over a period of more than 50 years, one of the principal architects of New Zealand’s modern archives system.
